Fresh Fig, Gruyere and Arugula Sandwich

You know Fall is right around the corner when those mildly sweet and luscious figs start showing up at your local grocery store.  I just craved for an open-faced fig, gruyere and arugula sandwich when I came across these lovely brown turkey figs at the store today!

The creamy saltiness of the gruyere, the mild sweetness of the fig and the slight bitterness of the arugula is such a delicious combo!! This is a wonderful open-faced sandwich-- a light and yet, tasty and satisfying, lunch.

The shot above was taken right before it went in the oven.  See the gooey gruyere cheese nicely melted after it came out of the oven.

  • French bread
  • Brown turkey figs
  • Gruyere
  • Arugula

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Slice figs and gruyere cheese 1/4” thick. Set aside.
  3. Layer arugula, gruyere and figs on sliced french bread. Place on cookie sheet and into the oven for 3-5 minutes or until cheese is melted and starts to bubble.
  4. Serve immediately.

  1. Yum! A drizzle of honey, especially truffle honey, would take this simple sandwich up a notch for me. If you do not have gruyere, I think a light, fluffy ricotta would be delicious as well. Eat it Up!

  2. Those are delicious looking figs. My dad is italian and he grows figs that look just like that in his backyard and those trees are like his babies. Great recipe!
